Volleyball Upends Cooper Union in Four Sets
BROOKLYN, NY – Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) registered a double-double (13 kills, 10 digs) and Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) dished out a career-high 25 assists as the St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team defeated Cooper Union 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 25-17, 25-22) on Monday night at Brooklyn Technical High School.
St. Joseph's trailed 18-22 in the opening frame before going on a 7-1 run to close out the set. The Lady Bears couldn't carry the momentum into the second set as they fell behind 8-2 thanks to several unforced errors and would not get any closer than five points before dropping their only set 15-25.
Both teams remained tied at 9-9 in the third set before the Lady Bears pulled away behind Kathleen McCarthy's three service aces to extend their lead to 10.
Neither team would build larger than a three point lead in the final frame. Cooper Union threatened to send the match to a deciding set leading 17-20, but St. Joseph's outscored the Hawks 8-2 to seal the victory.
McCarthy finished with ten digs, six kills and six aces. Sophomore Victoria Curran (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) had nine digs, eight kills and two service aces.
St. Joseph's returns to the court on Thursday, September 24 hosting City Tech. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School.
