Lady Bears Volleyball Falls to Medgar Evers in Five Sets
BROOKLYN, NY – In their final conference match of the season, the St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team lost a close five-set match (25-23, 19-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-10) to Medgar Evers on Friday night at Brooklyn Technical High School. Medgar Evers finishes as the #4 seed while St. Joseph's takes the #5 seed entering the HVWAC Tournament on Thursday.
Junior Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) recorded her second double-double this season with a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs in the loss.
The Lady Bears dropped a close opening set, but stormed back to take the next two sets and appeared poised to snap their losing streak, but Medgar Evers started the fourth set with an 8-1 run and never looked back. In the fifth and deciding set, St. Joseph's fell behind 10-3 and couldn't close the deficit. St. Joseph's struggled throughout the match with their serve receive allowing the Cougars to hold a 22-13 advantage in aces, which proved to be the difference down the stretch.
Kathleen McCarthy added eight kills, five digs and five aces and Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) dished out a match-high 22 assists. Victoria Curran (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) was inactive with a wrist injury suffered in the Brooklyn College match.
Medgar Evers (4-15, 2-3 HVWAC) was led by Charita Henry who tallied a match-high 15 kills and 27 digs.
St. Joseph's (3-15, 1-4 HVWAC) will face Purchase College on Tuesday night in a non-conference road match to close out the regular season. The HVWAC Tournament will begin on Thursday, October 29th with the Lady Bears travelling to Medgar Evers for a rematch in the quarterfinal round playing for the right to advance to the semifinals on Sunday, November 1st.
