Lady Bears Drop Both Ends of Tri-Match

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team (3-13) lost to Old Westbury 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-13) and Brooklyn College 3-1 (26-28, 25-16, 27-25, 29-27) on Saturday afternoon at Brooklyn Technical High School.  Junior Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) led the Lady Bears with 13 kills and 23 digs over the two matches, after missing three weeks with a leg injury.

Attempting to avenge a loss earlier this season, the Lady Bears nearly snapped their losing streak against Brooklyn College in a tightly contested match where St. Joseph's reached set point in every frame except the second.  The Lady Bears took the first set after leading from the outset with the Bridges fighting off five set points.

Brooklyn stormed back to take the second frame starting off with a 7-0 run and never trailed in the set.

St. Joseph's led the entire third stanza and held four set points, but was unable to close out the set, and Brooklyn finished with a 7-1 run to steal the set from the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears held the lead again for most of the final frame, with the Bridges taking their first lead at 23-22.  St. Joseph's staved off a match point and earned a chance to send the match to a deciding fifth set, but once again couldn't capitalize and the Bridges won four of the last five points to end the match.

Junior Kathleen McCarthy registered her second career double-double leading the team with 11 kills and 13 digs.  Ulloa led the defense with 17 digs and added nine kills.  Victoria Curran (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) dished out 18 assists and had 12 digs and four aces.

Brooklyn College (4-13) was led by a double-double from Caitlin McMullen (10 kills, 10 digs) and a match-high 29 assists from Lisenia Rodriguez.  The win snaps the Bridges eight-game losing streak.

In the first match of the day, St. Joseph's couldn't keep up with Old Westbury who came into the match with a seven-match winning streak and had 30-7 advantage in kills.  Ulloa led the Lady Bears with four kills.  Tynishia George paced Old Westbury with 13 kills.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday night to face Mount Saint Vincent in a non-conference road matchup.  Game time is scheduled for 8:30 PM.
