Volleyball Drops Two Matches at College of Notre Dame Tri-Match

BALTIMORE, MD – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team fell to 1-2 on the season with a pair of 3-0 losses to College of Notre Dame and Chestnut Hill (PA) at the MBK Complex on Saturday afternoon.  For the weekend set, Kathleen McCarthy led the Lady Bears with seven kills.

St. Joseph's was overpowered in the opener against Division II Chestnut Hill (4-9), never leading at any point, losing by a score of 25-10, 25-12, 25-12.  The Lady Bears also committed 25 attacking errors for a -.226 hitting percentage.  Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) had four kills, Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) had eight assists and eight digs.  Victoria Curran (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) also had a team high eight digs.  Freshman Cassie Benson led the Griffins with 10 kills and a .533 hitting percentage.

In the second match against College of Notre Dame (3-6) the Lady Bears hung tight with the Gators for the opening frame until the Notre Dame outscored St. Joseph's 10-2 to close out the set 25-17.  The Gators pulled away early in the final two sets behind Catherine Subrizi's 14 kills and Christina Kudma's 29 assists, with Notre Dame securing the final two sets 25-10 and 25-12.  Ashley Rodriquez and McCarthy led St. Joseph's with five kills each.  Simo had 10 assists, her first match recording double digit assists.  Curran led the team defensively with six digs.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Monday, September 21 for their home opener against Cooper Union.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School.
