Women’s Volleyball Falls to Medgar Evers in HVWAC Quarterfinals

BROOKLYN, NY – #5 St. Joseph's College women's volleyball lost to #4 Medgar Evers College in five sets (25-16, 22-25, 25-27, 25-16, 15-10) on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Tournament.  The loss snaps the Lady Bears streak of five-straight HVWAC Tournament Championships.

In a match that was reminiscent of the match played last Friday at Brooklyn Tech, both teams were evenly matched.  The Lady Bears took a 2-1 lead after winning the second and third sets with their best offensive sets of the match connecting for 16 of their 30 kills in the match.  St. Joseph's was unable to close out the match with a lackluster fourth set.

In the deciding set, the Lady Bears led 8-5 at the side change, but the Cougars closed out the match with a 10-2 run to win 15-10 and sending them to the semifinals.

Junior Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) recorded her third double-double of the season leading the Lady Bears with 16 kills and 22 digs.  Kathleen McCarthy and Victoria Curran (Queens, NY/Mary Louis) had 14 digs each.  Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood)   dished out 18 assists.

Three Cougars recorded double digit kills led by Charita Henry with 18 kills.  Medgar Evers held a 41-30 advantage in kills and 14-35 in attack errors.

The Lady Bears close out the season with a record of 3-17 losing their last 15 games.  Medgar Evers improves to 5-17 and advances to the semifinals on Sunday to face #1 College of New Rochelle.
