Lady Bears Drop HVWAC Decision to New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team lost to the College New Rochelle in another hard-fought five set match on Tuesday night, falling 3-2 (25-14, 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-9) at the CNR Wellness Center in an HVWAC showdown.

The Lady Bears fall to 1-2 in the HVWAC (3-11 overall) while New Rochelle advances to 2-0 in the conference (4-8 overall). It was St. Joseph's fourth five-set match in their last five matches.

St. Joseph's got off to a slow start dropping the opening set 14-25 but the Lady Bears came back to win the second set 25-23, outscoring the Blue Angels 5-1 to close the set. New Rochelle retaliated with another win in the third taking an early lead and never looking back. The Lady Bears finished strong again in the fourth frame, outscoring CNR 5-2 to end the set and push the match to a fifth and deciding set.

In the final set, the teams exchanged side outs forcing seven ties until the 9-9 mark. New Rochelle closed out the match taking the final six points behind the serve of sophomore Elizabeth Johnston (Plano, TX/John Paul II).

Senior Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) paced the offense with a career-high 18 kills, matching the season-high set a week ago by junior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney). She added 13 kills for her second straight double-double and third of the season. Matthews, who stepped in as setter for the ill Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood), dished out 23 assists with seven kills. Freshman Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) led the defense with a career-high 17 digs, adding seven kills, while junior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) contributed 16 digs.

New Rochelle had two players finish with double-digit kills led by senior Patrice Marshall (Brooklyn, NY/Samuel J. Tilden). Junior Zena Jamal (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) had 34 assists.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Thursday October 7th for a non-conference road matchup against the College of Staten Island slated to begin at 7 p.m.
