Women's Volleyball Rolls Past CSI in Straight Sets

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team earned their fourth win of the season upending the College of Staten Island in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22), on Thursday evening at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center spoiling CSI's Serving for a Cure Night.

St. Joseph's (4-11, 1-2 HVWAC) grabbed the opening frame 25-19 never trailing in the set. The Lady Bears managed to put away eight kills while the Dolphins struggled offensively, scrapping together four kills and committing eight attack errors.

Staten Island (1-11, 0-5, CUNYAC) put up a tough fight in the second stanza which saw eight ties and three lead changes. The frame remained deadlocked until the 23-23 mark with St. Joseph's taking the final two points on a Laura Evans (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) and Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) block followed by a Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) kill for the 25-23 set victory.

The Dolphins led for most of the early parts of the third set building their largest lead at the 15-8 mark. The Lady Bears rallied to tie the set at 18-18 and pulled away late to close out the match 25-22.

St. Joseph's employed a balanced attack led by Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) who recorded eight kills and 16 digs, both match highs. Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) contributed seven digs with 11 kills while McCarthy finished with six kills. Matthews handed out 16 assists.

Staten Island was led by Joanna Tepedino and Kaitlyn Flynn who had six kills apiece.

The Lady Bears resume Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference play hosting Sarah Lawrence College on Tuesday, October 12 at Brooklyn Technical High School with first serve slated for 7:30 p.m.
