Lady Bears Swept by New Jersey City; Ulloa Player of the Week

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team fell at the hands of New Jersey City University Tuesday night in straight sets, 3-0. The loss drops the team to 6-17 and 2-3 in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC).

Junior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the Lady Bears with four kills and eight digs in the non-conference match. New Jersey City made the most of their service attempts, registering 22 aces, 10 coming from Tabitha Jordan.

In conference news, senior outside hitter Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood), was just named the HVWAC player of the week for the week of October 19, in an announcement made by the conference yesterday.

Ulloa played in four matches on the week, tallying 40 kills and 18 digs. Her 40 kills gave her a 2.67 kills per set average. She recorded two double-digit kill matches with 16 in a conference game against Sarah Lawrence, and 13 against City Tech. Ulloa was a dig and a service ace short of a double-double in each match.

The Lady Bears' next match is Friday, October 22, at home against Lehman College. It is their final tune-up before the HVWAC Championship Tournament the following week. The team will also be celebrating senior night, honoring the final home games for Ulloa, Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood), Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) and Lauren Norris (Sunnyside, NY/Long Island City)
