Lady Bears Downed in Thrilling Conference Match

BROOKLYN, NY - The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team was defeated by the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons on Tuesday night in an intense conference battle 3-2. The Lady Bears are now 4-12 on the year and 1-2 in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference, while the Gryphons are 3-8 and 1-1 in conference play. Senior Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) had a match-high 16 kills and fell a dig shy of a double-double.

The Lady Bears, who have gotten off to slow starts in the past, captured a back and forth first set, which set the pace for the night. The set had to go into extra points, with St. Joseph's coming out on top, 26-24. Sarah Lawrence overcame a late 22-17 hole to tie the set up at 24, but senior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) ended the set with two straight services aces. Ulloa and Sarah Lawrence outside hitter Jillian Richardson each had five kills to lead the set.

Sarah Lawrence would take the next two sets handedly, 25-13 and 25-19 to go up 2-1 in the match heading into the fourth set.

In the fourth frame, St. Joseph's jumped out to early leads of 6-0 and 8-1, but the Gryphons fought their way back to tie the set, 12-12. The Lady Bears maintained focus and went on a 13-5 run to close the set 25-17 and force their fifth five-set match this season.

The stage was set for an exciting final set. This time it was Sarah Lawrence who jumped out to an early lead, with St. Joseph's in need of a comeback. The comeback fell short however, as the Gryphons took the set 15-12 to win the match. The back and forth set was tied as late as 11-11 before Sarah Lawrence pulled away for good. Richardson had five kills in the final set for he Gryphons to spark the victory.

McCarthy finished with a career and match high 24 digs to go along with eight kills, while junior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) handed out 25 assists for the Lady Bears.

St. Joseph's hits the road for their next game, a non-conference matchup with City Tech. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
