Women's Volleyball Falls to Undefeated Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College Lady Bears volleyball team was defeated by the Brooklyn College Bulldogs in straight sets on Thursday night, 25-20, 25-16, 25-22. The Lady Bears put together a strong effort in their first home match of the season, but weren't able to upend the undefeated Bulldogs as they fall to 1-4 overall (0-0 HVWAC) on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-0 (3-0 CUNY)

The Lady Bears fell behind early in the first set, but climbed back to within two points, 18-16, thanks to an 8-0 run including four service aces from freshman middle hitter Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's). That was as close as the Lady Bears came though, as the Bulldogs were able to put them away, 25-20.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 11-0 lead in the second set and held off a late Lady Bear charge to win the set, 25-16. Last week's HVWAC Rookie of the Week, junior outside hitter Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), finished with four kills in the set for the Lady Bears.

In the third set, the Lady Bears got off to a hot start of their own, opening the frame with nine straight points. However, the Bulldogs regrouped and scored 25 of the next 38 points to win the set, 25-22. The set was tied as late as 22-22, but the Bulldogs scored the final three points to earn the victory. Lady Bear senior outside hitter Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) had five kills in the set.

McCarthy led the team with eight kills and finished with a .533 attack percentage for the match. Moran registered 12 digs and a team high five service aces. Senior outside hitter Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) had a soild performance, with four kills and a game high 15 digs.

Junior right side hitter Colette Dragon (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley) led the attack for the Bulldogs, finishing with a game high 10 kills while also notching five digs and five service aces.

Next up for the Lady Bears is a home tri-match against Keystone College (PA) and St. Elizabeth (NJ). The first match is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Brooklyn Technical High School.
