Women’s Volleyball Earns Win Over Cooper at Kean Tournament

UNION, NJ – After dropping decisions to Keystone and Southern Vermont on Friday night, the St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team defeated Cooper Union in straight sets on Saturday afternoon to notch their first victory of the season. The Lady Bears stand at 1-3 after falling to host Kean University 3-0 in the finale.

The Lady Bears boast four newcomers on this year's squad. Junior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) in her first action as a Lady Bear made an immediate impact, leading the team in kills (30) in all four matches. In the win over Cooper Union, Matthews finished with 11 kills. For her efforts, Matthews was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Senior outside-hitter Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) also had a strong showing tallying 19 kills for the tournament. She nearly recorded a double-double against Cooper Union, with 10 digs and eight kills. Senior setter Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) dished out 67 assists, including a 24 assist performance against Cooper Union, one assist shy of matching her career-high. Ulloa and Simo are the only two Lady Bears to play all four years.

Senior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) led the defense with 26 digs and also served up a team leading eight aces.

The Lady Bears return to the court on Tuesday, September 14 hosting Patchogue campus counterparts, St. Joseph's – Long Island, in a non-conference matchup for the team's home opener at Brooklyn Technical High School. First serve is at 7:30 PM.
