Women's Volleyball Drops Pair of Non-Conference Decisions

JAMAICA, NY – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday, falling in three sets to Old Westbury (25-12, 25-10, 25-16) but coming back strong against York College, pushing the match to a fifth set before falling to the Lady Cardinals (24-26, 25-11, 25-17, 25-21, 11-15).

The Lady Bears offense struggled against Old Westbury, combining for only 11 kills, their lowest output of the season. St. Joseph's held early leads in the first and third sets, but couldn't keep pace with the Panthers who maintained a .303 hitting percentage for the match.

Senior outside hitter Yliane Ulloa (Queens, NY/Midwood) led the Lady Bears on defense with eight digs and junior outside hitter Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) added four kills and five digs.

Senior Ashley Greene led Old Westbury (9-4) with eight kills and junior Kristina Giordano turned in an 18 dig, 15 assist double-double.

York 3, St. Joseph's 2 (24-26, 25-11, 25-17, 25-21, 11-15)
St. Joseph's rallied back against host York College taking them to five sets, the Lady Bears first five set match this season. St. Joseph's led for most of the first set, but fell short allowing York their first lead in the final two points, losing in extra points. The Lady Bears rebounded strong in the second set to even the match, limiting the Lady Cardinals to only 11 points. Old Westbury claimed the third set taking an early 4-0 lead and never trailed throughout.

The Lady Bears fell behind 6-1 early in the fourh set to the Cardinals, however, outscored the Cardinals 8-4 with the set deadlocked at 17-17 to push the match to a fifth set. In the deciding set, the teams rallied back and forth and remained even at 7-7, but York managed to pull away, ending the set and match at 15-11.

Ulloa had a match and season high 16 kills and added eight digs to lead St. Joseph's. Matthews contributed 12 kills and eight digs, her fifth game this season with double figure kills. Senior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) fell one kill shy of a double-double with 10 digs and nine kills and senior setter Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) tallied 29 assists.

Freshman outside hitter Maria Suero-Santos paced York College (3-8) with 10 kills.

St. Joseph's (2-8, 0-1 HVWAC) hosts Pratt Institute on Tuesday, September 28 for a Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference match at Brooklyn Technical High School starting at 7:30 PM.
