Women's Volleyball Falls to Medgar Evers in HVWAC Opener
BROOKLYN, NY - The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team lost in four sets (21-25, 12-25, 25-17, 23-25) to Medgar Evers College in their first HVWAC conference game Monday night. The loss drops the Lady Bears record to 2-6 (0-1 HVWAC), while the Lady Cougars advance to 4-3 (1-0 HVWAC).
In the opening set St. Joseph's came out strong dropping the set by only four points despite a -.312 hitting percentage. Medgar maintained the momentum in the second frame committing only one attack error and capturing the set 25-12.
The Lady Bears rallied in the third set improving their hitting percentage to .241 earning the set 25-17. St. Joseph's led for most of the closely contested fourth set, but Medgar Evers edged out a 25-23 victory to clinch the match.
Junior outside hitter Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the offense with a team-high 14 kills. Four Lady Bears finished with double-figure digs led by Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) with 20 digs. Senior setter Melissa Simo (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) dished out 28 assists.
For Medgar Evers, Charita Henry led two Cougars with double-digit kills tallying 15 kills and eight digs.
St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, September 25th for a non-conference, road tri-match against York and Old Westbury at York College starting at 1:00 PM.
