Matthews and Cornia Grab HVWAC Accolades

NEW YORK, NY – After leading the St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team to a straight-set victory over Cooper Union in their season opener, senior Kim Matthews (Breezy Point, NY/Bishop Kearney) and sophomore Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) were named the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Volleyball Player and Rookie of the Week, in an announcement released by the conference yesterday.

Matthews, an outside hitter from Bishop Kearney, led the Lady Bears attack putting away 13 kills with six service aces and four digs. A member of last year's All-Conference team, Matthews also received Player of the Week honors once and was a two-time Rookie of the Week, last season.

Corina, a sophomore setter from Miller HS, had a strong performance in her first collegiate game, handing out 28 assists in the win over Cooper Union. The 28 assists is the second most in a three-set game in the past four seasons.

The Lady Bears continue their 2011 campaign on the road travelling to Morristown, NJ today to face former HVWAC rival College of St. Elizabeth at 7:30 p.m.
