Volleyball Splits at Green Mountain Tri-Match

POULTNEY, VT – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team split a weekend tri-match defeating host Green Mountain College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-15) before falling to Gordon College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-13) on Saturday afternoon.

In the day's first match, St. Joseph's rode excellent serving and consistent passing to a straight set defeat of the hosts, Green Mountain (2-5), collecting 21 service aces to only 2 receiving errors. Senior outside hitter Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the way with seven kills and eight aces to go along with 11 digs and sophomore setter Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) managed the Lady Bears attack with 14 assists. Chanleigh Casey had a team high seven kills for Green Mountain, while Kara Egan and Megan O'Keefe each collected eight digs in a losing effort.

Gordon College (8-4) came out strong in the day's second match, jumping on St. Joseph's college early and taking the opener 25-14. The Lady Bears however would fight back and narrowly missed snatching the second set away but losing five of the final six points to end up on the wrong side of the 25-20 final score. Gordon again proved to be too much in the third, easily handling the Lady Bears, 25-13. Matthews again led the way for the Lady Bears, with seven kills and six digs. Rookies Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) and Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, NY/Molloy) anchored the defense with seven digs apiece. Chelsie Clemens led the Fighting Scots with a team high eight kills and Claudia Amado put together an excellent all around performance with six kills, six aces and 13 digs.

St. Joseph's (3-3) returns to action on Monday, September 26 for their 2011 home opener hosting York College for a non-conference match at Brooklyn Technical High School at 7:30 p.m.
