Lady Bears Drop Both Ends of Tri-Match

Lady Bears Drop Both Ends of Tri-Match

OLD WESTBURY, NY – Coming off a win in their home opener, St. Joseph's women's volleyball (4-5) couldn't keep the momentum going as they fell in straight set losses to Old Westbury (12-6) and Lehman (5-6) in a tri-match at Old Westbury.

The Lady Bears opened the afternoon against the host Panthers. St. Joseph's was unable to generate much of an attack, finishing the match with 14 total kills. Senior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the squad with seven of the 14. Fellow senior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) finished with a game high 16 digs and freshman Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) chipped in with ten.

Old Westbury was led by Ashley Greene who finished with a double-double, registering 12 kills and 12 digs. Kimberly Catania (12) and Kristina Giordano (13) also had double-digit digs.

St. Joseph's offense was thwarted once again in the second game of the tri-match against the Lehman Lightning. The Lady Bears were taken down in straight sets for the second time in the afternoon. Matthews led the Lady Bears with eight kills and a match-high tying ten digs. Rios finished with three kills and eight digs while Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) had a match-high 19 assists.

St. Joseph's looks to even up their record as they return home for a tilt with Medgar Evers on Tuesday, October 4th. First serve is slated for 7:30 pm.
