Lady Bears Sweep York in Home Opener

Lady Bears Sweep York in Home Opener

BROOKLYN, NY – After playing its first six games on the road, the St. Joseph's women's volleyball team finally came back to Brooklyn for its 2011 home opener. The Lady Bears showed off for the home crowd, defeating the York Cardinals in straight sets, 25-13, 25-23, 25-19.  The win puts the Lady Bears back over .500 at 4-3, while York falls to 3-13.

The Lady Bears jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the opening set, only to see the Cardinals rally to within a point, 13-12. From there St. Joseph's, in particular sophomore Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's), took over. The Lady Bears closed out the set on a 12-1 run thanks in part to Moran's two kills and four service aces to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

St. Joseph's was unable to build on the momentum of the 12-1 run at the end of the first set, as York quickly took a 10-4 lead in set number two. The Lady Bears clawed back, but seemed unable to take hold of the lead from the Cardinals until senior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) collected her eighth kill of the set breaking a 22-22 tie and giving St. Joseph's its first lead since the opening point. It took one more Matthews kill to end the set, 25-23.

The third set went back-and-forth in the early going, with five ties and two lead changes before the Lady Bears outscored the Cardinals 12-6 to put the set away. Senior Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) had seven of her season-high 11 kills in the final set.

Matthews led the Lady Bears with her second double-double of the season, finishing with 16 kills and 14 digs. Moran set a career high with seven service aces, five in the opening set, while sophomore Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) cracked 20 assists for the third time this season, collecting 25.

Yasheka Lewis and Stayce Kay Muirhead shared the Cardinal lead with six kills apiece. Lewis also finished with a team-high tying nine digs.

The Lady Bears are off until Sunday, October 2nd when they head to Old Westbury, NY for a tri-match with Lehman and Old Westbury.
