Rios Collects 26 Digs in Loss

BROOKLYN, NY – St. Joseph's women's volleyball opened a stretch of six games in seven days with a loss to New Jersey City, 3-0. The Lady Bears (8-8, 1-0 HVWAC) hung tough in all three sets, but were unable to pull out a victory, falling 25-18, 25-23, 25-17.

The Gothic Knights (5-14, 0-5 NJAC) took the early lead in the first set and never looked back, going on to a 25-18 win. The second set was a nail-biter through and through. The wild set saw 10 ties and four changes. New Jersey City captured the biggest lead of the set, a five point advantage, 17-12, only to see the Lady Bears come roaring back to take the lead, 22-20. The Gothic Knights charged to tie the game 23-23 and win it 25-23 on two Jade Medley kills. New Jersey City controlled the third set and finished off the sweep, 25-17.

Freshman Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) set a career high with 26 digs in the match. It was the most digs by a Lady Bear since Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) collected 27 in last season's HVWAC semi-final match against Sarah Lawrence and the most ever in a three-set match since 2007.

Sophomore Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) followed her first career double-double with an eight kill, eight dig performance. Her eight kills were a team-high.

The Gothic Knights were led by Medley. She finished with a game-high 16 kills. Teammate Indigo Hatcher chipped in with nine kills of her own.

St. Joseph's will continue its conference play on the road when they travel to Sarah Lawrence to take on the Gryphons on Wednesday, October 19th. The two teams met this past weekend at the St. Joseph's College, Patchogue Invitational with the Lady Bears coming out on top 3 games to 1. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
