Lady Bears Earn First Round Bye with Win Over Yeshiva

NEW YORK, NY – St. Joseph's women's volleyball wrapped up their conference schedule with a 3-1 win over Yeshiva. The win secures them the number two seed in the upcoming Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Tournament and guarantees them their first winning season since 2008.

St. Joseph's (12-10, 4-1 HVWAC) went into Yeshiva knowing that a win gives them a first round bye in the Hudson Valley tournament and played determined to make that happen. The Lady Bears jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 25-18.

Set number two was a battle, but the Lady Bears came out on top 25-22, giving them a 2-0 advantage in the match. The third set also went down to the wire as Yeshiva avoided the sweep, squeaking out a 25-23 victory. Playing like a team on a mission, St. Joseph's dominated the fourth set 25-11 to clinch the match and second place in the conference standings.

Senior Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) matched her career high which she set on Sunday with 19 kills. She also recorded her ninth double-double of the season with a team-high 26 digs.

Overall, six Lady Bears finished with double-digit digs including Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) and Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) who each had 22. Moran also added 11 kills for her second double-double. Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, NY/Molloy) set a new career high with 13 digs, besting the 12 she notched just three days prior.

Reigning HVWAC Rookie of the Week Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) directed the offense, dishing out a career high 39 assists, the most by a Lady Bear since Jamie Mascetti in 2007.

St. Joseph's has one final tune-up before the HVWAC Tournament. The Lady Bears play host to Staten Island on Thursday, October 27. The team will be celebrating Senior Night and will honor its two seniors, Kim Matthews and Kathleen McCarthy. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
