Lady Bears Sweep Dolphins on Senior Night

Lady Bears Sweep Dolphins on Senior Night

BROOKLYN, NY – The Lady Bears honored their two seniors the only way they knew how, with a win in their regular season finale over Staten Island. Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Kathy McCarthy (Breezy Point, NY/Fontbonne Hall) helped cap a 13-10 regular season with a sweep of the Dolphins Thursday night.

St. Joseph's was in cruise control all night, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-12, 25-15. The Lady Bears refused to let Staten Island get into a comfort zone, but had no issues with their offensive attack. St. Joseph's landed 31 kills while committing only 13 errors.

Set number one was deadlocked at 10-10 before the Lady Bears took over going on a 6-0 run. The team never looked back, taking the set 25-18. The second set was all St. Joseph's as they jumped on the Dolphins early and often on their win to a 25-12 win. The third and final set was again close at the start, but St. Joseph's pulled ahead and outscored Staten Island 15-5 to win the set and the match.

Matthews led the way for St. Joseph's with a match-high 13 kills. She added 11 digs for her tenth double-double of the season. McCarthy chipped in with five kills and seven digs.

Brittany Olenick and Pola Poskrobko shared the Dolphin lead with five kills apiece.

With the regular season now in their rear-view mirrors, the Lady Bears turn their attention to the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Tournament October 30th at New Rochelle. St. Joseph's earned a first round bye as the number two seed in the tournament with a 4-1 regular season conference record and will play the winner of #3 Pratt vs. #6 Sarah Lawrence in the semifinal round at 3:00 pm.
