Matthews and Cornia Sweep USCAA Weekly Accolades

BROOKLYN, NY – The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) recognized two Lady Bears players after their week of excellent performances culminating in the 2011 HVWAC Championships. Senior outside hitter Kim Matthews (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) and sophomore setter Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller High) were respectively named USCAA Player of the Week and USCAA Setter of the Week.

During the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference tournament, Matthews put up career high numbers with 22 kills in a victorious four-set match against Pratt Institute. That, coupled with 15 digs, made for her 11th double-double of the season. In the Lady Bears' second place finish behind Culinary, Matthews added another six kills and 10 digs rounding out her week with 60 kills and 60 digs.

Sabrina Cornia posted a career-high 42 assists in the semi-final victory against Pratt Institute. In the third set, Cornia served an ace to end what became the longest set in Lady Bear's recent history with a 31 – 29 score. Cornia ended the tournament with two double-doubles contributing to her week's average of 8.3 assists, 3.4 digs, and 0.9 aces per set.

Kim Matthews was earlier named the Association of Division III Independents Player of the Week and ended the season with honors as she was named to the 2011 HVWAC All-Conference team for the second time in her career. Matthews, Cornia, and the rest of the Lady Bears ended the 2011 season with a 14-11 record, their first winning season in three years.
