Lady Bears Volleyball Rolls Past Cooper Union in Home Opener

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College women's volleyball team captured a straight-set victory (25-10, 25-16, 25-7) over Cooper Union on Friday night in the Lady Bears' season opener at Brooklyn Technical High School.

St. Joseph's (1-0, 0-0 HVWAC) assembled a balanced attack that hit for an efficient .345 and 27 kills, never trailing in the match.  Senior Kim Matthews (Breezy Point, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the way with a match-high seven kills, eight assists and nine digs.  Sophomore Nicole Rios (Astoria, NY/Mary Louis) added six kills and seven digs.

Junior Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) served up a match-high six aces, the Lady Bears combining for 17 in the contest, and added four kills. Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, NY/Miller) dished out a match high 14 assists.

Cooper Union (0-1) was led by Amanda Yuan who had a team-high three kills with the Hawks finishing with eight for the contest.

In the opening set, St. Joseph's broke away with a 7-0 run behind Moran's five aces and the set was never in question.  In the second stanza, six different Lady Bears recorded a kill with Rios leading the attack with three and the team combining for 10 kills.

The finale was all St. Joseph's, the Lady Bears jumping out to a 13-2 lead which prompted a Cooper Union timeout, but couldn't slow the Lady Bears offense that hit a blistering .615 in the set.

St. Joseph's returns to the court on Wednesday, September 19, welcoming Clinton Hill rivals Pratt Institute to Brooklyn Technical High School for a Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference match starting at 7:30 p.m.
