Women's Volleyball Moves Into Tie of First in HVIAC With Sweep of Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Extending their winning streak to three games, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team moved into a tie for first place in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-11, 25-14) on Thursday evening at Brooklyn Technical High School.

The Lady Bears (9-5, 4-0 HVIAC) are now winners of six of their last seven while the Cougars (1-14, 0-6 HVIAC) failed to snap a 12-game skid.

St. Joseph's was led by sophomore Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) who put down a match-high 12 kills against only one error for a .393 hitting percentage, and was the only attacker with double digit kills. She also landed five service aces, also a match high. Senior Megan Moran (Syosset, N.Y./St. Dominic's) contributed nine kills, seven digs and four blocks. Sophomore Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) anchored the defense with 10 digs and senior Sabrina Cornia (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) directed the offense with 22 assists.

Medgar Evers was paced by Janiece Hill who had six kills and Beatrice Bonhomme added 12 digs to lead the defense.

The Lady Bears seemed to get off to a slow start against the one-win visitors, allowing the Cougars to stick around and within just two points in the late stages of the opening set, but the Lady Bears won four of the final five points of the set, capped by a Cornia kill, to seal a 25-19 opening frame.

The second and third stanzas were controlled by the Lady Bears as they found themselves trailing only once early in the third set before cruising to a straight set victory.

Sitting at 4-0 in conference play, the Lady Bears now are tied atop the league standings with Culinary and are set to face the Steels on Sunday, October 20th in an HVIAC tri-match hosted by Yeshiva University at Baruch College.

St. Joseph's takes a two-match break from conference play, returning to action on Thursday, October 17th hitting the road to face Lehman College starting at 7 p.m.
