Women's Volleyball Tripped Up in Bay State

WESTON, Mass.—Junior Lauren GaNun (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) posted her second 20-kill match of the season, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team was defeated by Massachusetts foes Pine Manor College and hosts Regis College in a tri-match at Higgins Court on Saturday afternoon.

GaNun totaled 26 kills on the afternoon to lead the Lady Bears (3-8) and added eight digs and four blocks.

In the opener against Pine Manor College (4-9), the reigning USCAA and AD3I Player of the Week slammed a match-high 21 kills in a four-set loss. Senior Jennifer Moncino (Ridgewood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) contributed eight kills and team-high 13 digs while Anna Carbone (Ozone Park, N.Y./Mary Louis) handed out 23 assists.

The Lady Bears led for most of the first set before a 4-0 run gave the Gators a 19-17 lead they wouldn't relinquish. St. Joseph's would draw even in the second set, leading by as many as six in the frame, holding off a late Gators run for a 25-22 set win.

Pine Manor stormed back in the third and fourth sets to take the match, hitting .333 over the final two sets with 24 kills against just seven errors. Susan Le's 15 kills led three Gators with double-digit kills and Ashley Whiteshield dished out 40 assists.

Host Regis (13-7) dominated the nightcap in a straight-set, 25-13, 25-11, 25-5 win, limiting the Lady Bears to just eight kills for the match—five from GaNun. Sam Bliss paced the Pride, who trailed only one and hit .333 for the match, with 12 kills.

St. Joseph's returns home and will face borough foe Medgar Evers College on the road on Thursday, October 2 at 7 p.m.
