Women's Volleyball Scores Skyline Sweep of Maritime on the Road

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. — Freshman Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) handed out 30 assists and sophomore Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) had 10 kills to lead seven different Bears with a kill as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team (7-7, 4-2 Skyline) scored a straight-set (25-17, 26-24, 25-13) Skyline Conference win over Maritime College (3-18, 1-7 Skyline) on Tuesday evening.

How It Happened

The Bears committed six fewer attack errors in the first and closed out a 25-17 opening set with on a 9-3 run powered by pairs of kills from Morales and Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan).

A close second stanza saw SJC creep out to a five-point lead early at the 12-7 mark but then saw neither team ahead by more than two after the 14-all mark. The Bears fought off a set point at 24-23 on a kill from Intindola and the Bears used a Maritime miscue to earn a set point of their own and Valentina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) sealed a 26-24 set win to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

The navy and gray hit a whopping .433 in the third combining for 14 kills to overwhelm the hosts in a runaway 25-13 frame to secure the sweep. The set was highlighted by a 10-0 run that saw the Bears slam six kills and serve three aces.

For the Bears

  • Morales recorded her third double-double of the season pairing her team-high 10 kills with 11 digs and four aces. 
  • Intindola directed the offense to a season-best.290 hitting effort handing out 30 assists—a new three-set personal best—and also put away a career-high six kills at a .417 clip.
  • Urgo hit .444 and fell one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and team-high 13 digs.
  • Hoxha matched her career-high with seven kills.
