Women’s Volleyball Sinks Maritime in Four

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. —  Junior Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) dished out a career-high 39 assists helping the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team to a season-best hitting percentage in a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-8) triumph over SUNY Maritime College (2-9, 0-5 Skyline) on Monday evening.

Six different Bears (4-3, 2-1 Skyline) combined for 43 kills on the night with the attack led by Martina Urgo's (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) 13 kills on a .258 hitting effort. Middles Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) had 11 kills and Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) chipped in seven kills, both hitting over .300 for the match.

How it Happened

The Bears used an 8-3 run in the opening set to pull away after the fifth tie of the set at the 11-11 mark. SJC landed five aces (three from Urgo and two from Intindola) as part of a closing 9-3 spurt.

Similar to the opening set, the second stanza featured five ties before the navy and gray assembled a 6-1 run at the 12-12 mark to build an 18-13 lead and never trailed again. The Privateers tried a late rally to steal the frame wiping out four SJC set points but a Morales kill — her sixth of the set — built a 2-0 set lead.

The hosts raced out to a 10-4 lead in the third and the Bears finally clawed them back at 18-all, taking the lead at 19-18. But the hosts used a 4-1 run to regain the lead and held on to extend the match to a fourth set.

After dropping a close third, the Bears left no doubt in the fourth. SJC took a 5-0 lead to open the frame and extended to an 11-1 advantage and never allowed the hosts back into the set. The Bears hit .346 in the fourth with 11 kills and held the Privateers to a match-low three kills at a -.107 clip.
