Women's Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Decision to Manhattanville in Dig Pink Game

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  Senior Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) posted match-highs of 13 kills and 17 digs, but the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball came up short against second-place Manhattanville College on Monday evening at The Hill Center.

How It Happened

A kill from Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) followed by a pair of kills from Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) gave the Bears (4-7, 2-5) an early 3-0 lead to open the game. But the Valiants drew even at 4-4 and crept out to an 11-7 lead. SJC fell behind by as many seven at 17-10 before clawing their way back into the set pulling to within four, 22-18, but couldn't come any closer.

Manhattanville (13-4, 7-1) grabbed an early lead in the second, but the Bears erased a six-point deficit at 16-10 and leveled the set at 21-all. In the middle of the 11-5 run, the Bears won four straight on a Saige Revella (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) ace, a Kane kill and a pair of Morales kills. But after drawing even, SJC couldn't pull ahead and the Valiants held on for a two-set lead.

The visitors went on to win the opening five points of the third led and despite five kills from Morales in the frame couldn't work their way back into the set.

For the Bears

  • Morales put down her 13 kills on a .355 hitting effort committing just two errors on 31 swings.
  • Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) chipped in six kills, two aces, and 10 digs.
  • Kane finished with five kills and 15 digs.
  • Adeoye added three kills.
  • Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) dished out 21 assists.
