Women’s Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night With Sweep of Purchase; York Match Rescheduled For Monday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  Senior Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) slammed a season-high 15 kills to power the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team to a 3-0 triumph (25-21, 25-13, 25-13) over Purchase College on Thursday evening at The Hill Center.

The Bears (6-10, 4-7) wrap up their Skyline season in eighth place while the Panthers (3-14) finish three spots behind. SJC still has one game remaining in their season as their postponed match vs. York has been rescheduled on Monday.

How it Happened

SJC go out to a slow start and was unable to pull away. After a pair of Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) kills and a Morales ace built a 10-6 lead, Purchase went on an 8-1 run to move on top by three, 14-11. SJC drew even at 15-all and neither team led by more than two before a pair of Panther miscues pushed the Bears ahead 22-19 and Morales sixth kill of the frame on set point sealed a 25-21 win.

The Bears raced out to an early lead in the second stanza and remained in control the rest of the way with Morales adding five more kills.

The Panthers opened the third with a 5-1 lead, their largest of the match, but the Bears erased the deficit midway through the set and later won eight straight for a 17-9 cushion that was never threatened.

For the Bears

  • Morales hit .256 on the evening, served up two aces and fell one dig shy of a double-double.
  • Urgo finished with nine kills and brought up a team-high 15 digs.
  • Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) added six kills and as many digs with a pair of aces.
