Women’s Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In a back-and-forth battle for borough supremacy, the St. Joseph's University, NY (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team was handed a 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 26-28, 25-19, 16-14) defeat in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening at The Hill Center.

The Bears (1-3) held four match points in the fifth-and-deciding set before the Bulldogs (3-2) slipped away with the victory winning the final six points of the contest.

How it Happened

The teams traded the opening two sets with the visitors winning set one by a 25-20 margin before the Bears took the second stanza by the same margin.

St. Joseph's prevailed in a highly contested third frame. The Bears erased three set straight points for the Bulldogs highlighted by an Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) to knot the set at 25-all and SJBK later won the final three points of the set on BC miscues for a 2-1 set lead.

The Bears raced out to an 8-4 lead in the fourth prompting a Bulldog timeout, but a 6-1 BC run put the Bears at a 14-12 disadvantage. With the set knotted at 15-all, the Bulldogs won four straight and went on to send the match to a fifth set.

St. Joe's took control of the fifth set early after a Rosa Rosas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) ace, and back-to-back kills by Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) and led 8-2 at the side change. A pair of kills by Adeoye brought the navy and gray to match point at 14-10 before the Bulldogs rattled off six straight to steal the win.

For the Bears

  • Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) led the Bears attack with nine kills and added two aces and 15 digs.
  • Adeoye scored a career-high 11 points, putting away eight kills to go along with four blocks and one ace.
  • Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) chipped in six kils, 12 assists, 17 digs, and two blocks for a double-double.
  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) logged her first collegiate double-double with 17 assists and 15 digs.
  • Poppet and McGinty finished with five kills each as seven different Bears recorded a kill.
  • Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) brought up a career- and match-high 39 digs leading five different Bears with double-figure digs.
