Women's Volleyball Outlasts Mount Saint Vincent in Four Sets

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Behind Kaitlyn Intindola's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) second triple-double of the season and Autumn Poppett's (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) 10 kills, the St. Joseph's women's volleyball team was able to bounce back from a dropped first set to earn a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18) against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday night.

How it Happened

The Bears (5-11, 4-5) were able to break ahead and take a 10-6 lead after a couple of errors by CMSV and a kill from Poppett. As the teams closed in on each other, Intindola, Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan), and Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) all recorded kills in an attempt to take the opening set. With the Bears holding set point, 24-18, the Dolphins rang off eight-straight points – propelled by a trio of Melanieann Broderick kills – to capture the set 24-26.

The Bears started the second set by taking an early 4-1 lead but through the work of six kills and two service aces, St. Joseph's took their largest lead of the night at 20-8. The CMSV team
fought back with a 15-4 run, but the navy and gray held onto the lead and took the set, 25-23, on Teuta Hoxha's (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) kill.

The third set remained close as neither team was able to jump ahead by more than two points for much of the period. The Bears were down 14-15 when a few errors and a kill from
Intindola pushed them ahead to a 19-14 lead. The team would ride this momentum and
grab four kills, with Urgo notching a pair, to secure the Bears' set victory, 25-19.

Much like the third set, the fourth and final set remained tight with neither side taking a major lead at first. With the set tied 16-16, the Bears went on a six-point run fueled in part by a service ace from McGinty and three kills to back her up. Leading 22-16, errors by CMSV and a kill from Intindola, to confirm her triple-double, sealed the set and the 3-1 match win.

For the Bears

  • Intindola's triple-double consisted of a team-leading 10 kills, 18 assists, and 10 digs.
  • Along with her 10 kills, Poppett had a pair of blocks.
  • Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) provided 12 assists and four digs.
  • McGinty finished with eight kills, three service aces, as many blocks, and seven digs.
