Top 10 Moments: #4 – Men's Soccer Makes Headlines in First Win

Saturday, October 1, 2011 was a historic day for the St. Joseph’s College men’s soccer team as they defeated Webb Institute, 10-2, in front of a home crowd at Brooklyn Technical High School in only their fourth game as a varsity program.

AD3I Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Year, freshman Raul Urshela posted a first-half hat trick, helping the Bears jump out to a 7-0 advantage at the break and the outcome was never in question.  Highlighting his single-game record four goals was a bicycle kick in the 28th minute.

The 86th minute saw another historic moment as sophomore Cynthia Gambino found the back of the net on a pass from Daniela Semilia for the first goal scored by a woman in Bears history.

The iconic goal assembled by two of the six women on the Bears roster also helped draw much attention to the co-ed team in the local media, with articles in the NY Daily News, NY Times Local, Ultimate Athlete Magazine and several other local papers.

The goal will also stand in the Bears record books as the only goal by a woman as the six females will have their own team to play for this season with women’s soccer added as a varsity team for the upcoming 2012 fall season.

Also contributing to the goal scoring was Gabriel Gonzalez (two goals), Nick Polo, Derrick Akwei and Omar Al-Dulimi as the Bears jumped out to a 10-0 advantage before surrendering two late minute goals for the final tally.
