Caitlyn Kakavas has been a multi-sport athlete all three years at St. Joseph’s.  She has competed on the softball, basketball and cross country teams since her freshman year, while also maintaining a solid GPA as a therapeutic recreation major.

In addition to her time in the classroom and on the playing field, Caitlyn has been a student worker in the Athletics Department all three years and has worked in the Sports Information Office for the last two years.  She is also an Orientation Leader and has successfully completed the Student Leadership Experience Level One training.  She has sat on the executive board of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) since its inception three years ago and will serve her second term as Vice President this upcoming year.

Caitlyn has distinguished herself on the softball diamond as an outstanding performer, splitting time as a catcher and third baseman.  She was an integral component in leading the Lady Bears to an unprecedented run a three straight appearance at the USCAA National Championships.  Most recently, she received two prestigious individual achievement awards, being selected to the USCAA National All-American and AD3I All-Independent First Teams on the basis of her stellar performance.  She was also the AD3I Student-Athlete of the Month for April 2011 and an AD3I and USCAA Player of the Week.  Caitlyn was named Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference Tournament (HWVAC) MVP and selected to the HVWAC All-Conference Team.  For her junior season, Kakavas batted .446 with 37 hits, 32 RBI and 27 runs scored.  She hit two home runs, 11 doubles and stole 10 bases, reaching base at an impressive .520 clip.  An outstanding defender with the glove, handling backstop and the hot corner duties with equal aplomb, Caitlyn committed just one error in over 180 chances during the season for an amazing .995 fielding percentage and caught two no-hitters as well.

On the basketball court, Kakavas played in 26 games averaging 14.4 minutes, 4.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.  A trademark hustler, Caitlyn is a great defender and shot 71.1% from the charity strip.  In preparation for the rigors of both the basketball and softball season, Caitlyn also performed well as a member of the Cross Country team, finishing in the top 40 at the Steven’s Tech Cross Country Invitational, completing the 4K course in just under 20 minutes.

A graduate of St. Agnes High School, Kakavas was a recipient of the distinguished Senator Frank Padavan Award for Outstanding Achievement during her senior year.  She also received the Physical Education Scholarship Award, the Community Service Award and was on the Student Council Executive Board all three years, working her way up to President her senior year.  She was also President of the TV-Studio Club and the Amnesty International.  Her leadership qualities were developed early as she was a two-time captain of both her basketball and softball teams.  In her senior season on the varsity basketball team, she received the CHSAA Cynthia McGrath Sportsmanship Award.

Caitlyn lives in Bayside, NY with her parents, William and Andrea; brother, Chris, 19; and sister, Jamie, 8.
