Jon Matzelle '11

St. Joseph’s knew that Jon Matzelle was a talented multi-sport athlete when he first arrived on campus.  What they didn’t know was how valuable he would be to the growth of the program during his illustrious career.  He proved to be invaluable to St. Joseph’s as the school progressed through the NCAA Division III Provisional process and was instrumental in developing a number of its Men’s Team programs from the club level to varsity status.

Coming out of St. Francis Prep High School, Matzelle received a partial scholarship to study at St. Joseph’s.  Jon is graduating with a degree in Business Administration and a Certificate in Marketing and was an active member of the Business Club.

Matzelle played four years on the Bears’ basketball team, leading them to two Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference (HVMAC) Championships during his freshman and junior campaigns.  As a freshman, Jon was named the HVMAC Tournament MVP in pacing SJC to their first-ever conference championship and was named to the HVMAC All-Conference Team in his junior year.  In addition, he was selected as a member of the AD3I Honorable Mention squad after his junior season.  One of the most prolific scorers in team history, Matzelle averaged 11.4 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game.  On January 29th, 2011, he joined the illustrious 1,000 points scoring club, finishing his career with 1,092 points.

The basketball court wasn’t the only place Matzelle excelled.  He was a member of four out of the five men’s varsity sports during his tenure and also competed on the club-level Golf Team.  His freshman year, he played on the inaugural Varsity Baseball team and received AD3I Third Team All-Independent honors as a designated hitter.  Jon also played varsity tennis and volleyball and won numerous Player of the Week Awards from the HVMAC, USCAA and AD3I across each sport in which he competed.

While at St. Francis Prep, Matzelle played forward and center on the basketball team and won the Prime Time Player Award.  He was also a pitcher and first baseman for the 2007 CHSAA championship baseball team.

Outside of St. Joseph’s, Mr. Matzelle currently holds two part-time jobs at Chase and at the Bay Terrace Country Club.  He resides in Maspeth, NY and is the youngest of four children to Richard and Darlene Matzelle.  He has two older sisters, Stefanie, 30, and Stacie, 29, and an older brother, Ricky, 26.
