Shannon Doherty '19

Junior Shannon Doherty is a three-year student-athlete at SJC Brooklyn, competing on the women’s swimming and cross country teams. She has twice been named — in each sport — to the Skyline Academic Honor Roll. She also earned Skyline All-Sportsmanship Team honors in cross country as a sophomore. For her efforts in the classroom, she was named to the second annual Bears Scholar-Athlete Team earlier this year.

The Brooklyn native has rewritten SJC Brooklyn’s swimming record book, currently holding eight school records with her senior season still ahead of her. She owns the Bears’ record in the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.43), 100-yard freestyle (58.27), 100-yard butterfly (1:06.80) and 50-yard freestyle (26.57). She was also part of relay teams that set program records in the 400-yard medley relay (4:26.17), 400-yard free relay (4:16.89), 200-yard medley relay (2:07.84) and 200-yard free relay (1:57.58). Doherty’s four individual records are the most by any SJC Brooklyn women’s swimmer, and she has impressively broken her own records a whopping 16 times since joining the team as a freshman, lowering the mark in the 50-yard freestyle on six occasions.

Doherty consistently puts up her best performances on the biggest stage, as three of her personal records and the 200-yard medley relay mark came at the 2018 Skyline Championships. In fact, at the Skyline Championships of her sophomore year, she posted four personal bests. At the same event in her freshman campaign, she recorded three top times.

The 5-foot-7 swimmer also scored the most total points ever by a Bear in the season-ending conference championships, with 18 her freshman year, 14.5 sophomore year and an eye-popping 39 points as a junior. The women’s swimming team has increased its win total each season during Doherty’s time on the team. This past season, the Bears earned the team’s most conference wins since joining the league.

In cross country, Doherty has been as consistent as they come, competing in every single meet her freshman and sophomore years and five out of seven this past season. Her strongest meet as a junior was the Purchase Invitational, in which she led the Bears and posted a 6-kilometer personal best time of 29:49.6.
