Bears and Lady Bears Honored at Annual Athletic Awards Night

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) athletic department wrapped up its 2012-13 athletic calendar by celebrating the successes and accomplishments of their student-athletes hosting their Annual Awards Night on Friday evening in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium.

Athletic Director Frank P. Carbone kicked off the ceremonies introducing Awards Night's first-ever guest speaker, Steve Somers '82. A Queens native, Somers played two seasons for the Bears basketball team and graduated from St. Joseph’s with a Bachelor of Science in Organic Chemistry. The founder and president of Vigon International—one of Fortune 500’s fastest growing companies five years running—delivered a motivating speech to the capacity crowd of student-athletes, coaches, parents and faculty.

Sports Information Director Anthony Macapugay introduced the coaches and student-athletes from the 15 teams as the evening’s emcee.  All 100+ student-athletes were presented with glass paperweights with the Bears and NCAA Division III logos and coaches presented their team special awards to their players.

The Athletic Department also recognized those who received major accolades from its respective affiliations.  In total, 29 student-athletes received All-Academic honors, 19 were named to the AD3I All-Independent Teams, 21 were selected to the Hudson Valley All-Conference Teams and six garnered USCAA accolades, five received AD3I Player/Rookie of the Year honors and five coaches were tabbed Coach of the Year. (The list of award winners are expected to grow as AD3I All-Independent Baseball and Softball teams and spring All-Academic Teams are still to be announced.)

After a touching reflection from senior volleyball player Martin Torres, the night concluded with the Year in Review slideshow that has grown to be a crowd favorite and highlight of the annual ceremony.

Student-athletes who were unable to attend the Awards Night can pick up their awards from the Athletic Office during normal business hours.
