Shannon Rom '15

Shannon Rom capped a brilliant four-year career with the Lady Bears as a multi-sport student-athlete in soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball.

Although she was a key contributor in all four of the sports that she played for SJC, the Breezy Point native had the most significant impact in triggering the soccer program’s growth and solidifying its continued success. In her rookie year, Rom played as one of six women on the inaugural men’s team, where she earned a key role on defense, starting in all 13 games for the Bears.

Rom would eventually set her sights on leading the newly formed women’s soccer team in her sophomore campaign.  In the team’s first-ever season, St. Joseph’s would go 7-4-2 and captured the HVWAC (now HVIAC) Championship. She totaled a solid 25 points, including 13 assists and six goals, and played strong defense in her three years as a member of the Lady Bears.

For her achievements on the field, she was named to the AD3I All-Independent First Team during her sophomore year and notched Second Team honors in her senior season.

Rom joined the softball team as a utility player in her sophomore season, where she amassed a career .289 batting average along with 29 RBI’s and 33 hits in 81 games playing over three seasons for the Lady Bears. St. Joseph’s earned HVIAC titles in all three seasons, and secured an appearance this season in the USCAA National Championships, claiming an opening round victory before eventually falling short in the double elimination tournament.

During her junior year, Rom added a third sport to her repertoire by joining the women's swim team and showed tremendous improvement during her two years on the squad. She helped the Lady Bears secure their first HVIAC Invitational title this past February, where she swam a personal best in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:36.96 during the title win.

As if competing in three sports wasn’t challenging enough, Rom opted to join the volleyball team in the fall of 2014 where she compiled 32 digs and 14 service aces in nine matches as a reserve for the Lady Bears.

What makes Rom’s accomplishments even more noteworthy is that despite playing four sports at a very high level, she was able to maintain a total GPA in excess of 3.3 and will be pursuing a Master in Education upon graduating from SJC.  Rom’s ultimate career goal is to serve as School Psychologist, helping troubled and underprivileged children achieve to their potential.
