FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — After a close late defeat in their opener on Saturday, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team secured a Sunday doubleheader sweep of Farmingdale State College on Sunday, 6-2 and 1-0, to level their record at .500.

The Bears (2-2, 1-2 Skyline) used a big five-run third in the opener to seal the win and rode a strong combined pitching effort in game two for the shutout win.

Game 1: St. Joseph's 6, Farmingdale State 2

The Rams (2-2, 2-1 Skyline) scored first with a solo unearned run in the second taking advantage of a two-out miscue.

The Bears responded in their following at bat with Sierra Bedrin setting the table with a leadoff single, sacrificed to second and Ashleigh Hartwig blasting a shot to the wall to knot the game at 1-all. SJC kept the pressure on loading the bases with a walk and a Alexis Buchanan single.

A Ram miscue allowed the go-ahead run to come home and Casey Bennett drew a full-count walk in a long at-bat to move ahead 3-1. A Vivian Tomovich single brought in two more for a 5-1 advantage.

Getting the start in the circle, Jessica Mecham kept the Rams bats at bay tossing scoreless innings until the sixth when a solo run cut the SJC lead to 5-2. But Hartwig helped get the run back in the seventh scoring Arianna Heinsch who led off with a double, but the four-run cushion was more than enough for Mecham who closed out the complete-game victory to improve to 1-1 in the circle.

Game 2: St. Joseph's 1, Farmingdale State 0 (non-conference)

Both pitchers combined to allow just one hit through three before the Bears scored the game's lone tally in the fourth. Buchanan reached on an error, stole second and scored on a Brianna Kilimet single down the line; the rookie's first collegiate hit going for her first game-winning RBI.

Tomovich, Bedrin, and Salvador all had strong outings in the circle for the combined shutout, the first ever over the Rams. Tomovich fired two innings of no-hit ball, walking three in a no-decision. Bedrin followed with two innings of one-hit ball to earn the victory. Gabriella Salvador tossed a three-inning save, giving up two hits, while striking out two —  including the game's final out looking —  to earn her first career save.

Hartwig (1-for-3, 2B) and Buchanan (1-for-2, R) accounted the other two hits.
