Alec Willis '18

Alec Willis ’18 concludes a memorable four-year athletic career at SJC Brooklyn, starting all four years on the men’s basketball team, as well as competing for the cross country and volleyball teams during his senior year.

On the hardwood, the Staten Island, New York, native amassed 915 points over 101 career basketball games, starting in all but three of them. During his senior year in the 2017-2018 season, he produced career-high numbers — averaging 12.9 points a game, while shooting over 45 percent from the field and behind the three-point line. He finishes his outstanding career third in the Bears’ record books in career three-point shooting percentage (37.1%) and fourth in three-pointers made (188).

Named team captain following his sophomore year, Willis has been the consummate leader on and off the court. He recently finished a term as president of the Bears’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, helping coordinate numerous fundraising and community service efforts and increasing the impact student-athletes have made across campus. Willis recently oversaw the planning and implementation of the “Battle of the Bears” competition, which involved each of our 14 sports programs competing throughout the year in categories designed to increase campus involvement, competition, academic excellence and service.

Embracing the role of starting setter on the men’s volleyball team in 2018, Willis directed the offense with a team-leading 194 assists and helped the Bears improve from a last-place finish in 2016 to fifth place this past season. The team narrowly missed its first-ever postseason appearance in the Skyline Championship tournament.

For his leadership and accomplishments on and off the court, Willis was recently named a semifinalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup Award — the first Bear student-athlete ever to be recognized — and was selected to attend the NCAA Inclusion Forum last year.

Always embodying the concept of putting student before athlete, Willis became the fourth Bear in any sport to receive CoSIDA Academic All-District Team accolades. He was also a two-time honoree on the Bears’ Scholar-Athlete Team, a three-time selection to the Skyline Academic Honor Roll and a member of the Skyline All-Sportsmanship Team.
