KANSAS CITY, MO – For the second straight year, the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) Baseball Rookie of the Year hails from St. Joseph’s College. Jon Mendez (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian), a freshman catcher, was named the 2009 Co-Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Independent catcher in a release sent out by the Association earlier today naming the 2009 All-Independent Baseball Teams.

BROOKLYN, NY – Anthony Langone (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) had two RBI and two runs and Jon Mendez(Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) drove in two as the St. Joseph’s College baseball team (12-20) lost two games to Newbury College(6-26) on Sunday afternoon in very hot and sunny weather at Juniper Park in Middle Village, Queens. The losses extend the Bears losing skid to six games.

NEWBURGH, NY – Jason Iannozzi (Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC), Keith Juricich (San Mateo, CA/Canada College) and Steve Tanamal (Brooklyn, NY/New Urtecht HS) each had four hits in a losing effort over a two-game set where the St. Joseph’s College baseball team (12-18) fell to Mount Saint Mary (25-9) on Saturday afternoon. The Bears let a five-run lead slip away in the final inning, losing 11-10 in eight innings, and dropping the second game 13-2.

Passione (Brooklyn, NY/Xavarian) went 3-for-4 and Chris Davidson(San Carlos, CA/Canada College) had three RBI in a losing effort as the St. Joseph’s College baseball team (12-16) dropped a 9-4 decision to Baruch College (15-9) in nine innings at Old Boys High School on Thursday afternoon. The game was a makeup of the originally scheduled matchup on April 11th that was cancelled by rain.

The Bears capture the season series 3-1 after splitting at home earlier this season.

PURCHASE, NY – St. Joseph’s College men’s baseball picked up their third win of the season on Saturday afternoon over Purchase College 9-2 behind a complete game four-hitter from Chris Coffey(Brooklyn, NY/Kingsborough CC). The Bears fell in extra innings in the second game of the doubleheader, the Panthers scoring three-runs in the bottom seventh to tie the game, and another in the eighth for the 7-6 comeback win.
